A must-see on any trip to the German capital, the Brandenburg Gate is one of the most famous landmarks in Berlin.

History

Built in the late eighteenth century, the Bradenburg Gate was erected by order of Frederick William II of Prussia. It's the only one of the old city gates still standing. The area around the gate has been the site of a large number of historical events and demonstrations.

How to visit the Brandenburg Gate?

You can visit the gate on foot, by public transport or aboard the tourist bus. To gain a deeper insight into the landmark, such as its links to the Acropolis in Athens, we recommend booking a guided tour or a free tour of Berlin. 

A symbol of unity

When the city was divided by the Berlin Wall, the monumental Brandenburg Gate stood in the restricted area and could be visited by neither East nor West Berliners. When the wall fell in 1989, the gate became a symbol of unity in the city.
